Photoshop Tip: Fit Image
Everyone who works with Photoshop knows the ‘Image Size’ dialog for resizing images. One question that comes up regularly is how to use this dialog in an ‘Action’, if the action will run with a mixture of images in portrait and landscape orientation. How do you resize each image to 800 pixels at the longest size? The answer is: you can’t use ‘Image Size’ for that. Instead use ‘Fit Image’. This option is less known, because it’s found at an unexpected place. It’s not under ‘Image’, but under ‘File – Automate’. By ‘fitting’ your image in a 800 x 800 pixels square, Photoshop will automatically resize it so that the longest side becomes 800 pixels.
